IMO BIR is the major revenue generating Agency of the Imo State Government saddled with the responsibility of collecting taxes. Over the years IMO BIR has increased the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by executing various pioneering programmes and implementing strategies which have impacted positively on revenue generation and collection, with the IGR moving from a monthly average of about 100 Million Naira in 1999 to approximately 1.5 Billion Naira in 2014, thereby making Imo State less dependent on proceeds from the Federation Account.
To make tax assessment and payment convenient for tax payers, IMO BIR commenced the establishment of mini tax offices in markets in 2006 and to date 38 of such offices are in operation. Furthermore, in January 2008, IMO BIR introduced the Self Assessment Filing System for individuals, the first of its kind in Nigeria.
